
Most of us have a question whether a riding a modified bike is legal in India. The answer to this is yes but with certain limitations. As long as you minorly modify your bike by changing its colour, or design, it will be allowed. However, if you make some major changes such as changes to the engine which may affect its performance and specifications, it will be considered illegal.
Also the RTO needs to approve these modification, so before you modify the vehicle, ensure you inform the RTO and get a clearance from them. Additionally, you also need to inform your comprehensive bike insurance company, as bike modifications lead to an increase in the insurance premium rates. Below are the lists what bike modifications are legal in India in 2025 and what is not.

Legal Modifications:
- Wrapping your bike is completely legal since you are not actually changing the paint of your bike.
- Frame sliders are legal as well as they protect your bike and are legal
- Horn under 120 db with the honk sound are legal.
- Exhaust that is not bent downwards more than 30 degree not protruding out and below 90db are legal.
- Under glow that is not above 1 meter from the ground legal but not if that neon extends to the sides
- Some HIDS with projectors and LED headlamp are completely legal.
- Updating foot pegs seats handlebar & grips is legal but not your mud-gaurd saree guard & fender.
- ECU remap is legal.
- Replacing tyres.
- High lift cams.
- Braided brake lines.
- Sintered brake pads.
- Performance Air filters.
- After market steering dampers.
- Short clutch levers, adjustable brake levers, Clutch and brake protectors.
- Bar end mirrors.
- Double bubble visor.
- Milled fuel caps.
- Frame sliders.
- Fork protectors.
- Luggage mounts.

Illegal Modifications
- Fancy stickers which depict your caste or a religious symbol, job post or family name is illegal.
- Modifying structure or colour of a vehicle.
- Removal of registration plates.
- Designer registration plates.
- Loud Exhausts 90db.
- Loud horn more than 120 db.
- Engine swaps.
- HID lights without projectors.
- Chasis Modifiations.
How to Register a Modified Bike in India?
How to register a modified bike? If you have modified your bike within the permissible parameters, you can easily get it registered. To do so you have to:
1. Get a clean chit from the RTO specifying the approved modification
2. Apply for the RC of the bike at the RTO
3. Visit the RTO with the required documents, including the approval letter
4. Pay the bike registration fee and take a receipt for the same
5. There will be an inspection of the bike, get it done at the earliest
6. The RTO will process your application and if found suitable, the registration will be approved
7. Receive the RC book with the modifications clearly stated
In case you get other modifications done, beyond those approved by the RTO, your motorbike may be seized by the traffic authorities as it is illegal to ride an unapproved, modified bike in the country.
